The monument is located in Point Pleasant Park overlooking Halifax Harbor and features the anchor and cable of HMCS Bonaventure, Canada’s last aircraft carrier that served 1957-1970. It is dedicated to the men and women who died while serving with the Canadian Navy during peacetime. In early 2018, due to deterioration of the monument, the military and Halifax Regional Municipality partnered -- with the support of veterans and military support organizations -- to carry out repairs (undertaken by 14 Construction Engineering Squadron), including securing the Bonaventure anchor and welding and securing the ship’s cable around the anchor as well as firming up the seaward side of the monument’s base to prevent further erosion. One of the monument’s memorials is in remembrance of the nine members of HMCS Kootenay who died during an explosion in the ship in 1969 in the English Channel.
