12 Wing Shearwater is one of the oldest military airfields in Canada and the birthplace of maritime patrol and naval aviation. In 1918, a year after the US entered the First World War, a sea base (US Naval Air Station Halifax) was established on a promontory at Eastern Passage known as Baker’s Point. Over the years the base expanded to become a station for the RCAF and the RCN and finally a wing of Air Command. The base played a major role in maritime air operations in the Atlantic during the Second World War. Today, 12 Wing is the centre of naval aviation supporting the RCN’s East Coast fleet with helicopter air detachments and contributing to humanitarian operations.
